I believe that the best way to show love, is through food. I learned this countless times from my mother as I was growing up. I have many memories of family parties and holiday gatherings where there was plenty of food, laughter, and love all around. I can also recall there being times when maybe the food didn’t turn out as expected but there were still stories to be told and laughter to be had and at the end of the day, no one was left wanting. Do my siblings and I still joke about the shoestring french fries in the beef stew, and the burned dinner rolls at almost every holiday dinner? Yes, we do and we remember our mother and her culinary missteps fondly because we know that it was all for the love of her family that she did the best she could with what she had. Â
Not only does food bring friends and family together but for me, it brought me to my tribe where I was able to be myself and shine. I view all whole food whether it is mindfully cultivated or something that simply occurs in nature like dandelions, wild berries, and mushrooms as a gift from the earth. It is love in its truest form. For me, taking that love from the earth and turning it into something even better and then sharing it and telling its story is what excites me most about cooking. And, even though I consider spices to be a gift from the earth, most of them grow in much warmer climates so I don’t get the opportunity to see the process from harvest to shipping. That’s why when I had the opportunity to create a blend with locally foraged chanterelle mushrooms, I jumped at the chance. It was one of the most exciting and meaningful projects that I have taken on to date. To know where your food comes from just makes it all the more special, and when there is a story to go along with it, it then gives it life.Â
